May 18th, 2012

At long last, I FINALLY got around to seeing the new Joss Whedon-produced, Drew Goddard-directed suspense thriller The Cabin in the Woods. As you may know, I’ve been CRAZY bizzy lately flying all over the US attending weddings in the past few weeks and this week — at long last — I get a few [...]

Jessica Simpson And Beyonce: From One Mommy Mogul To Another

May 18th, 2012

Maxwell’s mom can learn a lot from another superstar mama, Queen B.
By John Mitchell

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/simpson_jessica/artist.jhtml">Jessica Simpson</a> is basking in the glow of new motherhood after <a href="/news/articles/1684216/jessica-simpson-baby-girl-maxwell-drew-johnson.jhtml">giving birth to her daughter</a>, Maxwell Drew Johnson, on Tuesday, but if we know anything about celebrity moms, she'll be back to work in no time flat.</P><P>While she hasn't released an album of new material since 2008's country crossover record <i>Do You Know,</i> Simpson remains a true mogul. Her fashion line, the Jessica Simpson Collection, is the most successful ever for a celebrity. What began as a vanity line of bags and shoes has transformed into a billion-dollar brand that now also includes clothing, jewelry, fragrances and sunglasses.</P><P><CENTER><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:724613/cp~name%3Dnews%26id%3D1676907%26vid%3D724613%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A724613" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></CENTER></P><P>The dueling pulls of motherhood and celebrity create a tough balancing act for a new mom, but being a mogul already is evidence enough that Simpson can wear a lot of hats. Just look at <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyonc&#233;</a>, another multi-hyphenate superstar with a newborn who is already plotting her return to form.</P><P>Indeed, Queen B is a perfect example of exactly how to balance early motherhood with the rigors of being a mogul. She's done things her way and is readying her musical comeback with several <a href="/news/articles/1681308/beyonce-memorial-day-atlantic-city-shows.jhtml">planned dates in Atlantic City</a>, currently appears on the cover of<a href="/news/articles/1683832/beyonce-people-most-beautiful-woman.jhtml"><i>People</i>'s Most Beautiful issue</a> (a covert and classy post-baby body reveal, in true Beyonc&#233; style) and has even suggested she may at some point create a line of maternity clothes for her House of Dereon fashion line, telling <a href="http://www.harpersbazaar.com/magazine/cover/beyonces-baby-love-interview-1111"><i>Harper's Bazaar</i></a> late last year, "I love figuring out designs that still make me feel edgy and sexy while pregnant."</P><P>Here are the three ways Jessica should look to Beyonce for post-baby mommy mogul inspiration:</P><P><big><b>Bouncing Back Professionally</b></big><br> Simpson's focus has switched from music to television in recent years, though she has never ruled out returning to the studio. Motherhood is a subject that has proven to be ace songwriting material for several pop divas, most notably Madonna. Madonna's 1998 album <i>Ray of Light</i> was inspired by the changes having a child had on her life, from her pursuit of spirituality post-baby to the change in her priorities once Lourdes entered the picture. The album went on to become one of her best-selling and most acclaimed, scoring five Grammy nominations, including Album and Record of the Year, and winning three awards. Its success reinvigorated the star, who returned to touring a few years later with a bang and has been on the road multiple times since, setting records along the way.</P><P>Beyonc&#233; is reportedly already working on <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/02/14/beyonce-prepping-two-new-albums">not one, but <i>two</i> records</a>, and it goes without saying that baby Blue Ivy and the experience of motherhood will be a chief topic of her songwriting. She's also set to make her return to the stage for three concerts at the re-launch of Atlantic City's Revel Entertainment Center over Memorial Day weekend.</P><P>Simpson would be smart to put all the emotions she's feeling now to good use and start penning tracks for her return to music. The very emotions she's feeling now are the things that make for the best songs, something Beyonc&#233; is seemingly well-aware of.</P><P><big><b>Working on Your Fitness</b></big><br> Jessica seems intent to make her post-baby weight loss a public affair (Get it? That song is her most underrated jam!) with a reported <a href="http://todayentertainment.today.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/05/02/11490423-jessica-simpsons-baby-wait-is-over-but-weight-watchers-awaits?lite" target="_blank">multimillion-dollar endorsement deal</a> with Weight Watchers, clearly taking a cue from B by keeping it healthy.</P><P>Unlike so many other celebrities, who rush hard in ways that cannot be good for them to get their figures ready for "How I Got My Body Back" tabloid photo shoots as if it were some sort of competition, Beyonc&#233; didn't appear to feel any sort of rush to get her pre-baby figure back. According to her <a href="http://www.people.com/people/package/article/0,,20360857_20589758,00.html"><i>People</i> interview</a>, she has relied on a healthy, protein-heavy diet and three 90-minute workout sessions per week, mixing things up by combining running, dancing and exercise ball crunches. And the results speak for themselves: Four months later she looks fantastic, if not yet back to her perfect pre-baby figure. (Which is just fine; regardless of what the tabloids tell you, it is unnatural for the mother of a newborn to look as if she never had a baby in the first place just a few months after giving birth.)</P><P>"I feel my body bouncing back," B told <i>People.</i> "Whatever was tight and muscular, like my legs, I'm seeing it come back. You just have to work at it."</P><P>And work at it is exactly what Jessica will do &#8212; just in a more public setting than B. In the scheme of diets, Weight Watchers is among the healthiest and most effective. The program helps participants lose weight by forming helpful habits, eating smarter, getting more exercise and providing support, and has proven successful for such celebs as Jennifer Hudson.</P><P>Having negotiated her contract with the company in December, she may not be taking her cues from Beyonc&#233; here, but they clearly share the same mind-set when it comes to post-baby weight loss. Slow, steady, healthy and long-term is the goal.</P><P><big><b>Creating Products</b></big><br> While Beyonc&#233; doesn't have a line of baby clothes just yet, she has mentioned being interested in creating a maternity line for her House of Dereon label. Jessica may have a leg up on Beyonc&#233; in this department, given the breadth of products that have popped up under her Jessica Simpson Collection label.</P><P>As both moms search for ways into the elusive baby market, Christopher Gavigan, who works with Jessica Alba on her Honest brand, <a href="/news/articles/1677997/beyonce-motherhood-business.jhtml">told MTV News</a> that he urges celebrity moms like B and Jessica to stick to what they love when it comes to branding.</P><P>"Find what you're passionate about and go do that," he advised. "You articulate that in a brand or in a way you feel from a business perspective that you feel you get your focus articulated in some meaningful or special way. A lot of it is partnerships and leveraging the greatest assets of each other."</P><P><i>What else can Jessica learn from Beyonc&#233; &#8212; or vice versa? Let us know in the comments below!</i></P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></p>

‘Twilight’ Fans Want Kristen Stewart’s Bodyguard To Protect Them

May 18th, 2012

‘People now refer to Kristen Stewart’s bodyguard as ‘HBG,’ ‘ co-creator of ‘Kristen Stewart’s Hot Bodyguard’ Facebook page says.

Full disclosure about my love for “Twilight”: I don’t so much love the books and movies as much as I completely and totally adore the franchise’s loyal, enthusiastic, entertaining fans. Really it’s their passion and dedication that keeps me interested in the whole thing as we inch closer and closer to the release of the final film, “Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” That’s why I’ve decided to dedicate this week’s “Twilight” Tuesday to one of the many groups of fans with whom I’ve become acquainted over the last few years, Kristen Stewart’s Hot Bodyguard, more specifically, the three lovely ladies who birthed the creative and entertaining concept: Lynsey Jacob, Sarah Morrill and Jennifer Kelley.

“Kristen Stewart’s Hot Bodyguard” is a Facebook group dedicated to, you guessed it, Kristen Stewart’s hot bodyguard. The origin of their popular group (3,000 members and growing!) can be traced to first glimpses of said bodyguard during the “Eclipse” press tour, followed by an in-person encounter at Stewart’s NYC promotion for “Welcome to the Rileys,” and then an excellent bit of brainstorming during a walk to the subway that begot the term “HBG” (Hot Bodyguard) and the Facebook page. Since then, the ladies have kept close tabs on their man via photos, fellow fans and making the occasional trip to a major event. (I was lucky enough to meet Jacob, Morrill and Kelley at such an event, last year’s “Breaking Dawn – Part 1″ premiere.)

“The goal is always to get a wave,” Jacob told MTV News of the most memorable aspects of their HBG sightings. “It’s exciting. Another one that always cracks me up is watching all of the tweets about HBG when there’s an event going on. When he wasn’t at the Kids’ Choice Awards, people were freaking out. And these tweets are from around the world! Half the time it’s in another language.”

“I actually really enjoy making graphics and fun little [themed] pictures for the page,” Morrill added. “I also designed the shirts that we made for the ‘Breaking Dawn’ premiere last year and have already started working on some ideas for this year’s shirts and other swag. Other than that, it’s always cool to see how excited the fans get when we post new pictures or videos of HBG, especially because I’m just as excited to see them as they are! We will be representing Team HBG to its fullest at the ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 2′ premiere in L.A. in November and are excited to meet new fans and see some old ones from the premiere last year.”

One thing to point out about these ladies is that they don’t take themselves too seriously. Yes, they are dedicated fans, but they also just want to continue to have fun with the concept.

“When Stephenie Meyer grabbed a hold of our HBG heads on a stick and took photos with them, that was so cool,” Jacobs recalled of the author embracing their “fan art” at last year’s premiere. “We were always worried that people would think we were crazy instead of just creative fans, but overall, the page and the whole concept has been really well-received.”

“My dream for the group is for it to continue for as long as possible, maybe even until a gray-haired HBG is beating away the paparazzi with his cane in order to protect Kristen,” Morrill joked. “Truthfully, when we started this page a year and half ago, we never could have imagined what it would become. People around the world now refer to Kristen Stewart’s bodyguard as “HBG.” We did that. Stephenie Meyer knows who we are. Kristen mentioned our page in an article for British GQ last year. The awesome folks at MTV think we’re cool. It really doesn’t get much better than that! The only thing I could imagine that would put a cherry on top of this entire experience is to one day be able to change the group’s profile picture to one of the three of us with Kristen and ‘HBG.’

Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.”

Lady Gaga Taps The Darkness To Open Born This Way Ball

May 18th, 2012

Re-formed British rock band ‘honoured’ to serve as openers on European leg of Gaga’s tour, which kicks off August 14 in Bulgaria.
By James Montgomery

<P>Perhaps looking for some <i>actual</i> Heavy Metal Lovers, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> has tapped reunited British rockers <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/darkness/artist.jhtml">the Darkness</a> as the opening act on the first &#8212; though we're willing to bet not <i>last</i> &#8212; leg of her <i>Born This Way</i> Ball, which kicks off August 14 in Sofia, Bulgaria.</P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:717952/cp~vid%3D717952%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A717952" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></P><P>The Darkness confirmed the news Tuesday morning (April 10) on their official site (which, in a <i>very</i> Darkness move, is called <a href="http://www.theactualdarkness.com/home/" target="_blank">TheActualDarkness.com</a>), writing that they were "honoured [British spelling, extra classy] to announce their addition to the bill as main support for Lady Gaga's <i>Born This Way</i> Ball tour 2012."</P><P>The glammy, hammy rockers &#8212; best known for theatrical hits like "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" and "Growing on Me" &#8212; <a href="/news/articles/1484374/darkness-believe-thing-called-touring.jhtml">burned bright before imploding in 2006</a>, but announced a reunion (and plans for a new album) just last year. And as a way of kickstarting the next chapter of their career, frontman Justin Hawkins appeared in a well-received Samsung commercial that aired during Super Bowl XLV, in which he starred as a Spandex-clad pied piper who rescued folks from the monotony of everyday life. So, you know, it was basically a documentary.</P><P>It's not clear if the Darkness will serve as the opening act on <i>all</i> of Gaga's Euro dates (a spokesperson for the band did not respond to MTV News' request for comment by press time), but, thanks to the Mother Monster herself, we now know that there <i>are</i> European dates for the much-discussed <i>BTW</i> Ball.</P><P><a href="http://twitpic.com/97zvzf" target="_blank">Gaga unveiled the first 21 shows</a> early Tuesday morning on her Twitter account. After kicking off August 14 in Bulgaria, she'll make stops in Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Germany, France and the U.K. before wrapping October 6 in Barcelona.</P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></p>
